Caring for Lucky Bamboo

Please feel free to give me suggestions and or comments on caring for lucky bamboo. This is all from my personal experience and what works for me.

Do’s
1.       Do give it fresh water
-          Rainwater if best as long as it’s not too acidic
-          Bottled water is also ok but make sure it’s not distilled or RO
2.       Do keep it in a bright location
-          NO direct sunlight! Or else the leaves will burn
3.       Do fertilise every 3-6 months
-          Really depends on the quantity and size of the lucky bamboo
-          Use 2-3 drops of a complete aquarium plant fertilizer (I like to use Seachem Flourish)
4.       Do put an aquarium snail to fend off the algae
-          Not totally necessary but it’s cool
5.       If the leaves are yellow, put an iron nail in the water
-          Water WILL become rusty and the aquarium snail WILL die.
-          This is the lazy way!
6.       Do change the water BEFORE fertilizing
-          Again you don’t want to over fertilize.
7.       Do consult a Feng Shui guide
-          Last thing you want is messing up the Feng Shui
8.       Do throw away mushy, brown, rotting stalks
-          It will spread to the others!

Don’ts
1.       Don’t use chlorinated tap water
-          If that’s your only choice leave it overnight to let the chlorine evaporate
-          Avoid overly salty water i.e. well water or “salted “aquarium water
2.       Don’t submerge the leaves
-          It might survive for a couple of months but trust me it’ll eventually rot and die.
3.       Don’t overly fertilize!
-          A clear sign of over fertilization are yellow tips
4.       Don’t move the lucky bamboo.
-          They get accustomed to certain environments and may turn yellow if moved.
5.       Don’t put it near places with lots of temperature fluctuations
-          i.e. windows, heat vents, doorways, etc…
6.       Don’t buy cheap bamboo with no roots.
-          Self explanatory
